CERTIFIED MEDICAID PLANNERS
CERTIFIED MEDICAID PLANNERS
What is a CMP™?
A Certified Medicaid Planner™, also known as a CMP™, is a professional in the Medicaid planning field who has been awarded certification by the CMP™ Governing Board. Certification is granted based upon a qualified candidate demonstrating a mastery of the skills and knowledge of the subject matter.
To achieve certification, a CMP™ must meet certain education and/or experience requirements, show proficiency in Medicaid Planning through a thorough examination, and commit to adhering to the highest in professional standards. A CMP™ also subjects himself or herself to discipline by the CMP™ Governing Board.
What Does a CMP™ do?
The focus of a CMP™ is planning for Medicaid eligibility for long-term care assistance. Most states will provide assistance with skilled nursing facility (i.e., nursing home) care, assisted living facility care, and Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) – which include both medical and non-medical home care.
The Medicaid system is one of the most complex government benefits systems ever created and people usually have to try to navigate the system while also dealing with the personal hardship of the poor health or disability of a loved one. To successfully navigate this system, consumers use the services of a
Certified Medicaid Planner™. The CMP™ stays abreast of the frequent changes in Medicaid rules and has the skills and knowledge to help navigate the Medicaid system.
The goal of any CMP™ is to provide his or her client with the most cost effective and legal way to achieve eligibility for Medicaid. A CMP™ can help to design an eligibility strategy and implement that strategy. Because most strategies involve multiple professionals, the CMP™ often serves as a quarterback to the team and oversees the process of achieving eligibility through proven planning techniques. Once a potential Medicaid recipient is eligible, the CMP™ will file and process the Medicaid application and assist with any fair hearings.
Diverse Backgrounds. Unifying Principles.
A CMP™ can come from a variety of professional backgrounds:
Each of these professions intersects with the Medicaid Planning field in some way. While the majority of planners come from the legal, financial, and geriatric care communities, CPAs and other care professionals dealing with seniors on a regular basis are expanding their expertise to include Medicaid Planning as the need for long-term care Medicaid grows. Regardless of their background, as a CMP™ each certificant agrees to uphold the highest of ethical principles in the conduct of their performance as a Medicaid Planner.
